History of our Church and our vision for the future
St. Martin's began life as a 'mission church' to the Maxton and Elms Vale area of Dover. This was part of the vision of Christ Church, Dover at the beginning of the 20th century. St. Martin's was licensed for worship in 1901 by the Bishop of Dover on St. Martin's day (11.11.1901). From 1903 right through to the present day the church has had its own vicar and has been recognized as a church in its own right. The church is the focal point for worship and the preaching of the Gospel in the area. Since those early days the area has been developed on all sides of the Folkestone Road. The church is not only the centre of worship but the centre of the parish. Since the 1970's when Christ Church closed St. Martin's parish boundaries included much of the former church's parish.
For over 100 years St. Martin's has remained faithful to its evangelical roots. It has experienced many changes in worship styles over the years. Today we have a variety of services which include Communion, Family Worship and informal worship. Within these services we are open to the gifts of the Spirit and Prayer ministry. The music is led our Worship Group with a modern approach to worship using new worship songs. We use mostly modern worship songs without neglecting those timeless hymns that are still an inspiration today.
Throughout its history the church has always sense of mission to its local community. This is provided through Home Groups for studying the Bible, Children's Work through Promiseland, Girl's Brigade, local Schools and Women's Own.
Whilst we have seen many activities over the years we are constantly looking to do more.
- Worship remains focused on Jesus our Lord and saviour
- Our mission is to tell others the Good News of the Gospel
- The Church is the Body of Christ working for his Kingdom
We hope you will want to join us in His Mission. You will be very welcome.
Yours in Christ,
Kevin Garrett (vicar)
